No more New kids on the block

2011 is the year the ”new kids on the block” must step up their game. They can no longer say ”we want to be best of the new teams”. HRT will most probably still be worse of all teams and I expect Team Lotus and Virgin Racing to be better, but still worse than the ”older” teams.

Virgin continues to work without wind tunnel. It seems cost effective, but can they really extract the extra speed needed when competitors have innovative exhaust exits that might need wind tunnels to get correct?

Virgin Marussia

Well, they have managed an interesting solution with a very long exhaust that is connected just in front of the diffuser so part of the gases blow through the starter hole, making it a blown diffuser. Virgin stays with Cosworth engine and will not run with KERS.

Team Lotus has a good engine/gearbox combination with the Renault engine and Red Bulls 2009 gearbox. Reason for not having newer gearbox is said to be weight as last years gearbox was heavier with the double diffuser. Exhaust is for beginning of the year without any spectacular routing and they lack KERS.

As Team Lotus is involved in some juridical problems they might have their concentration diverted, but I believe they are professional enough to not let that happen. Team LotusWith the experienced drivers in Team Lotus coupled with the Renault engine and Red Bull gearbox I say that’s enough to keep Virgin Racing behind. It will not be enough to climb ahead of the more established teams yet. 1
